 OBJECTIVES: In vitro analysis of the influence of vertical peri-implant soft tissue thickness (STT) on nonsurgical and surgical implant surface decontamination efficacy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 360 implants were dipped in indelible color to imitate biofilm contamination, distributed to 30°, 60° or 90° angulated bone defect models and in subgroups of 40 assigned to a decontamination method (CUR: curette

  APA: air powder abrasion). Of these, 20 were subjected to a simulated STT of 1.5 or 3.0 mm, of which 10 were cleaned within a nonsurgical (NST) or surgical (ST) treatment. Uncleaned implant surface was determined by photographs. Surface changes were assessed using scanning electron micrographs (SEM). RESULTS: The overall cleaning efficacy decreased significantly (APA >

Treatment method, defect angle and approach were confirmed as predictors for the cleaning efficacy.
