This article provides an overview of the role of machine translation (MT) tools in language learning. Based on studies published over the past decade, it focuses on two main aspects: the use of MT tools in the learning process and learners’ perceptions of these tools. In terms of use, research shows that MT supports learners in vocabulary lookup, grammar checking, and improving writing and translation skills. However, excessive reliance on MT can reduce motivation to expand vocabulary and limit translation abilities. Regarding perceptions, learners value MT as an effective support tool but also recognize the need to double-check results to ensure accuracy. Based on the literature review, this article suggests future research directions to further assess the long-term impact of MT and explore effective ways to integrate it into language learning. This article provides an overview of the role of machine translation (MT) tools in language learning.
