Based on Svetlana Boym’s theory ofnostalgia, the paper analyzes Viet Thanh Nguyen’sworks in two aspects: restorative nostalgia andreflective nostalgia, to clarify the identity of theVietnamese American diasporic community. Withtwo novels The Sympathizer, The Committed, anda collection of short stories The Refugees, thewriter has quite successfully portrayed thenationalist identity and traumatic identity ofimmigrants in both positive and negative aspects,showcasing the writer’s sympathetic and criticalattitude. The writer criticizes the extremism of asegment of immigrants who want to turn ethnicityinto a tool for political goals, and at the same timesympathizes with the pain of most immigrants whohave lost loved ones. These two contents are placedon the historical background of the Vietnam Warin the flashbacks of the characters. From theresearch results, the paper contributes tointroducing a new way of perceiving Viet ThanhNguyen, an immigrant writer who is receivinginternational attention, and at the same timeproposes a way to research identity in general andidentity of the Vietnamese diasporic community inparticular, through the nostalgic perspective ofmemoryDựa vào lí thuyết hoài niệm củaSvetlana Boym, bài viết phân tích một số tácphẩm của nhà văn Viet Thanh Nguyen ở hai khíacạnh: hoài niệm khôi phục và hoài niệm phảnchiếu, nhằm mục đích nhận diện căn tính củacộng đồng di dân Mỹ gốc Việt. Với hai tiểuthuyết The Sympathizer, The Committed và mộttập truyện ngắn Người tị nạn, nhà văn đã khắchoạ khá thành công căn tính dân tộc chủ nghĩa vàcăn tính chấn thương của lớp người di dân – ở cảmặt tích cực và tiêu cực – với thái độ đồng cảmlẫn phê phán của nhà văn. Nhà văn phê phán tínhcực đoan của một bộ phận di dân muốn biến tínhdân tộc thành công cụ cho những mục tiêu chínhtrị, đồng thời đồng cảm với nỗi đau của hầu hếtnhững người di dân bị mất người thân, với nhữnggia đình bị chia cắt dẫn đến xung đột thế hệ.Những nội dung này được đặt trên cái nền lịch sửlà cuộc chiến tranh Việt Nam trong hồi tưởng củacác nhân vật. Từ những kết quả nghiên cứu, bàiviết góp phần giới thiệu cách tiếp nhận mới vềViet Thanh Nguyen, nhà văn di dân đang đượcthế giới quan tâm, đồng thời đề ra một cách thứcnghiên cứu căn tính nói chung và căn tính củacộng đồng di dân nói riêng, qua góc nhìn kí ức:hoài niệm.
