The scholar Truong Vinh Ky (1837-1898) left behind a huge legacy of works in many different genres such as poetry, prose, textbooks, dictionaries, historical and geographical research... Among them, he carried out and had research on the history and geography of Nam Kỳ, also known as Cochinchina, published quite early, starting with the work Petit cours de géographie de la Basse-Cochinchine, 1er Édition, Saigon, Imprimerie du Gouvernement, 1875 (Small Collection of Lectures on Geography of Nam Kỳ, first printed at the General Governor Palace Printing House, Saigon, 1875). Going beyond a 60-page set of lectures used to teach students in colonial schools, the work has become an outstanding book with great reference value on the history and geography of Cochinchina during the colonial period.Trong cuộc đời mình, học giả Trương Vĩnh Ký (1837-1898) đã để lại một di sản tác phẩm đồ sộ với nhiều thể loại khác nhau như thơ ca, truyện, sách giáo khoa, từ điển, khảo cứu lịch sử, địa lý... Trong đó, các khảo cứu về lịch sử và địa lý Nam Kỳ được ông thực hiện và cho xuất bản từ khá sớm, mở đầu là công trình Petit cours de géographie de la Basse-Cochinchine, 1er Édition, Saigon, Imprimerie du Gouvernement,1875 (Tập bài giảng nhỏ về địa lý Nam Kỳ, in lần đầu tại Nhà in Phủ Toàn quyền, Sài Gòn, 1875). Vượt lên một tập bài giảng 60 trang dùng để giảng dạy cho học sinh các trường thuộc địa, công trình này đã trở thành một biên khảo tiêu biểu, có giá trị tham khảo lớn về lịch sử hình thành và địa lý Nam Kỳ thời kỳ thuộc địa.
