Battery extreme fast charging (XFC) has been identified as a necessity to further drive the market penetration of electric vehicles. Today's thermal management systems are unable to keep up with the added thermal load under extreme fast charge. Along with an upgrade in the thermal management system, the full battery pack will need to be designed to enable fast charging. This ranges from material level cell design to pack interconnect design to advanced thermal management systems. While thermal management is not a limiting condition to extreme fast charge, it will need to be considered to drive towards the fast charge cost and volume goals.
