The Gridley Biofuels Project was initiated in 2003 as a Congressionally Directed Project (CDP). The City of Gridley was chosen for this project since it is an ideal, agriculture based town that is representative of many U.S. towns in which a wide variety of agriculture products are produced locally. The harvesting and processing of these products in the Gridley area creates millions of tons of biomass residues each year. Although these biomass residues have little or no commercial value, they are ideal feedstocks for the production of liquid fuels, power and other renewable products which can provide a significant revenue source to local farming communities. The primary objective of the Gridley Biofuels project was to support research, development, demonstration, and commercial design of an integrated biorefinery (IBR) that could efficiently and economically convert a wide variety of agriculture-based biomass residues to high-quality fuels, electric power and other products which providing a positive impact on the environment. This report describes work carried out during the second phase (budget period two: PB2) of the Gridley project which included technology feasibility (BP2a), conceptual design of the commercial plant during 2007-10, and final design of the commercial plant (BP2b) during 2014-15. The Gridley commercial plant is planned for deployment during 2020.
