 The purpose of CPBR is to foster and facilitate research that will lead to commercial applications. The goals of CPBR?s Energy from Biomass Research and Technology Transfer Program are to bring together industry, academe, and federal resources to conduct research in plant biotechnology and other bio-based technologies and to facilitate the commercialization of the research results to: (1) improve the utilization of plants as energy sources
  (2) reduce the cost of renewable energy production
  (3) facilitate the replacement of petroleum by plant-based materials
  (4) create an energy supply that is safer in its effect on the environment, and (5) contribute to U.S. energy independence.<

  CPBR brings together the resources of member organizations to address the problems and the future of U.S. plant-derived energy resources and plant-based energy industries through a program of industrially relevant, scientifically meritorious basic, applied, and scale-up research.<

  The process of selecting projects is highly competitive. It insures that the work carried out through CPBR has technical merit, commercial relevance, and high potential for the transfer of new technologies from the academic research laboratory to the marketplace.<
