This project pursued the development of a non-rare-earth permanent magnet motor architecture. It incorporated a novel rotor geometry that allowed the use of lower energy Al-Ni-Co high flux, low coercivity magnet material. This material was not readily adopted at the start of the project, due to demagnetization within existing magnetic circuit designs, a problem that was overcome with the final design produced in the project. The result of the research and testing showed that it is feasible to produce an AlNiCo motor, meeting the DOE performance targets, while exceeding DOE 2015 cost targets and nearly meeting 2020 cost targets.
