The extrapolation and/or the application of the cumulative knowledge obtained on the refining of residues, heavy oils and bitumen might open an opportunity for a cleaner route for coal valorization. This approach is not free from challenges, on the contrary R&D looks quite complex, but at least it does not start from scratch.
