This book provides comprehensive treatment of all mammal genera, both native and introduced (at least those most likely to be found in the wild), occurring in North America north of Mexico, inclusive of marine mammals found in coastal waters. It is not the purpose of this text to treat all of the distinctions comprehensively, but rather to provide a means for the rapid identification of isolated specimens. For this reason, most of the comparative and relative characters have been omitted. The features that have been included are those that seem to be particularly distinctive, or that provide means for separating forms which are closely similar. As many salient features as possible have been used for each genus in order to facilitate the determination of fragmentary specimens.--Introduction.
