Osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLT) are commonly encountered in, and can be caused by, chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI). From a clinical and biomechanical point of view, treating CLAI simultaneously during OLT treatment is paramount in optimizing patient outcomes, protecting the (repaired) ankle cartilage, and stopping the cascade of ankle cartilage damage. Preventing recurrent (micro) instability minimizes (shear) forces and further degeneration of ankle cartilage.
