Effects of bentonite on cation-exchange and moisture retaining capacities in the sandy soil of NinhThuan province for asparagus cultivation were studied. It is well known that the Ninh Thuan’s sandysoil is rather suitable for asparagus cultivation, meanwhile the water saving ability was not more than10%. Evaluation of the moisture holding capacity was carried out using a tensiometer tool and nutrientretention capacity of the soil was estimated by monitoring the N, P, and K content over time. Theexperimental results showed that when 3% of bentonite was being mixed with the sandy soil the cationexchange capacity and crop yield were increased by 40% and 10%, respectively. Due to the ability toretain moisture and nutrients, benthonite is supposed to be used for widespreading the method oftreatment of sandy soils as an advanced solution in agricultural production and alleviation of negativeimpact of fertilizer residues. Keywords: bentonite, cation-exchange capacity, asparagus, crop yield, moisture
