About 72 percent of Papua New Guinea's (PNG's) 10-year-olds cannot read well enough to understand an age-appropriate text. These students are at risk of dropping out of school and not being able to continue onto secondary education. PNG's future development hinges on ensuring that a larger proportion of its children acquire more education and skills. For all children to read well enough to understand an age-appropriate text, more children need to attend school and receive a quality education. PNG's education resources are not allocated in an equitable way and the 2023 budget did little to remedy the situation. This brief makes four proposals for how the 2024 budget could be used to improve education in PNG.
