Climate change is one of the main challenges for pastoralists. Studies have found statistically significant links between climate and cattle populations. Pastoralism is becoming an increasingly precarious livelihood. The World Bank and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have developed a strategy to improve the resilience and sustainability of livestock production in the IGAD region of Africa. The focus is on ruminants and camels in pastoralist and agropastoralist (PAP) production systems because of their particular vulnerability to climate change. The strategy is based on a wide range of information sources, including modelling of the resilience of pastoral livestock systems. This publication summarises the findings of the modelling undertaken for PAP cattle systems in Oromia, southern Ethiopia.
