Cinnamon oil is extracted from the bark of cinnamon trees (Cinnamomum spp.) which has good antimicrobial activities and is considered a substitute for synthetic antibacterial agents. Based on abundant domestic raw material supply of cinnamon, toothpaste containing cinnamon oil was formulated to prevent tooth decay without using fluoride. By using a simple mixing method, in addition to changing the ratio of thickeners and foaming agent, a base-paste having suitable physical and foaming ability was prepared from 19 % calcium carbonat, 20 % sorbitol 20 %, 1.2 % sodium lauryl sulfate, 1 % carboxymethyl cellulose, 2 % xanthan gum, 3 % glycerin, 0.15 % methyl paraben, 0.1 % aspartame and distilled water adding up to100 %. The base-paste was mixed with Cinnamon oil at concentrations of (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) % to find the suitable quantity of the active ingredient. The 5 formulations were compared on 3 factors: smell
in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activities on strains of MRSA, MSSA, Candida albicans and phase stability over 6 cycles of thermal shock. The most optimal formula that was chosen contained 2 % Cinnamon oil. The final Cinnamon toothpaste meets the requirements for organoleptic properties, hygiene and safety criteria and physicochemical properties according to TCVN 5816:1994.Tinh dầu Quế có tác dụng tốt trong việc ức chế vi sinh vật và có thể thay thế các tác nhân kháng khuẩn tổng hợp. Tận dụng nguồn nguyên liệu Quế trong nước, kem đánh răng chứa tinh dầu Quế được nghiên cứu nhằm tạo ra một chế phẩm ngừa sâu răng không chứa fluor. Bằng phương pháp trộn đều đơn giản, kết hợp với thay đổi tỉ lệ chất làm dày và chất tạo bọt, công thức kem trắng có thể chất và khả năng tạo bọt phù hợp được xây dựng như sau: calci carbonat 19 %, sorbitol 20 %, natri lauryl sulfat 1,2 %, carboxymethyl cellulose 1 %, gôm xanthan 2 %, glycerin 3 %, methyl paraben 0,15 %, aspartam 0,1 %, và nước cất vừa đủ 100 %. Kem trắng được phối hợp với tinh dầu Quế ở các nồng độ (1, 2, 3, 4 và 5) % để tìm ra nồng độ tinh dầu phù hợp cho chế phẩm. Các công thức được đánh giá về 3 yếu tố: mùi, khả năng kháng khuẩn, kháng nấm in vitro trên các chủng MRSA, MSSA, Candida albicans và độ bền pha qua 6 chu kì sốc nhiệt. Từ các kết quả thử nghiệm, công thức kem chứa 2 % tinh dầu Quế được chọn để phát triển thành sản phẩm. Chế phẩm kem đánh răng tinh dầu Quế đạt yêu cầu về ngoại quan, vệ sinh an toàn và tính chất hóa lí theo TCVN 5816:1994.
