Taoism profoundly influenced and played a crucialrole in the spiritual life of the local inhabitants in thesouthern part of Gianh River in the 17th and 18th centuries. Infact, the Nguyễn lords had policies towards this religion inorder to meet the spiritual needs, to create the spiritual life ofCochinchina’s society, and to achieve the goal of nationalrule and security. The specific policies indicated that thedevelopment of Taoism in the spirit of “three teachings as aharmonious aggregate” and the consolidation of folk beliefs.In this article, the author explores the perception of theNguyễn lords, as well as, the transformation of Taoism inCochinchina by presenting the policy of developing Taoismby the Nguyen lords.
