Ngày nay, hội chứng tự kỷ đang là một vấn đề nóng bỏng trong xã hội và được xem là một trong các dạng rối loạn tâm thần ở trẻ em. Tự kỷ là một dạng bệnh trong nhóm rối loạn phát triển xâm nhập ảnh hưởng đến nhiều mặt trong sự phát triển của trẻ, nó thể hiện bằng sự sút kém nghiêm trọng và lan tỏa các chức năng tâm thần trên các phương diện: Tương tác xã hội kém, ngôn ngữ phát triển chậm và lệch lạc bất thường, hành vi và ứng xử nghèo nàn, định hình, lặp đi lặp lại… Những hội chứng này làm cho trẻ gặp rất nhiều trở ngại, khó khăn giao tiếp, tương tác xã hội. Chính vì vậy, nhân viên công tác xã hội phải thực sự trở thành trung gian, cầu nối hỗ trợ, cung cấp những kiến thức, kỹ năng cần thiết giúp phụ huynh có con mắc hội chứng tự kỷ xử lý tốt những vấn đề thực tiễn đặt ra đối với con em mình.
