ThepaperintroducesanumericalmodelingofVoraxialSeparatorusingAnsysFluent.TheVoraxialcanspecificallybeusedtoseparatecontaminants,suchasoilandsandfromlargevolumesofliquidsandwithoutanypressuredrop,enablingitselftobeutilizedinmanydifferentapplications,bothoffshoreandonshore.TheVoraxialwhichisnowavailableinseveraldifferentsizestoprocessvolumesiscapableoftwo-wayseparation.Theseparatorconsistsofapipewithaninternaldiameterof100mm,inwhichtheinternalswirlelementisplaced.Theswirlelementisequippedwithvanes,whichgeneratetheswirlingflow.Downstreamoftheswirlelement,duetothecentrifugalforcetheoilflowstowards thecenterofthe1.7m longpipe.Atthe endofthis pipe,the oilis extractedby aconcentricallyplacedpick-uptube.Simulationresultsshowedthat theseparatorwith9vansagoodunderstandingofflowpatternsoftheswirlingturbulentflowofoil-watermixtures.Themethodologyemployedusestwo-phaseflowmodelsthatincorporateacoalescencemodelforoildroplets.Theaimistounderstandtheoil-waterseparationcapabilityofdevicesusingswirlingoil-waterflowsasfunctionofkeyparameters,suchasgeometry,oilpropertiesandoperatingconditions.
