Writing is a significant skill in language acquisition in general and foreign language acquisition in particular. It is a productive language skill that plays an essential role in promoting learners’ foreign language acquisition through experimenting with words, chunks of language and sentences to communicate their ideas effectively and reinforce the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary that has been introduced in class. However, this has always been a great challenge to freshmen of high-quality programs at University of Engineering and Technology, Vietnam National University in Hanoi. What is more, when non-English majored students are required to have an international certificate of English proficiency or VSTEP to meet the requirements for graduation, they are supposed to make greater efforts to improve this challenging skill as it is a compulsory component in any test to get certificates. That is why this study aims at finding some common grammatical errors freshmen of high-quality programs at University of Engineering and Technology make in writing paragraphs to better assist them in mastering writing skills.
