Thuật ngữ "mơ hồ - ambiguity" lần đầu tiên được đề xuất bởi W.Empson trong công trình Seven types of ambiguity (1930). Theo ông, mơ hồ "là một ý nghĩa không xác định, một ý định biểu đạt nhiều loại sự vật cho phép có nhiều cách giải thích". Mơ hồ có thể phân thành hai dạng: mơ hồ đa nghĩa xác định và mơ hồ đa nghĩa bất định. Mơ hồ là một phương diện đặc trưng của tư duy nghệ thuật, nó chi phối và để lại dấu ấn trong quá trình sáng tạo nghệ thuật. Mơ hồ là một phẩm chất có ý nghĩa quan trọng trong đời sống văn học: nó mở ra trường ý nghĩa bất tận khiến văn học trở thành chiếc chìa khóa giúp con người mở cửa vào chiếm lĩnh mọi mặt đời sống nhân sinh
