Dưới sự tác động tổng hợp của các yếu tố: vị trí địa lý, tài nguyên tự nhiên và kinh tế xã hội, vốn đầu tư và chiến lược phát triển, trên lãnh thổ 559,21 km2 của Thạch Thành có bức tranh lãnh thổ rất riêng. Đa dạng với các lãnh thổ kinh tế tổng hợp và lãnh thổ kinh tế ngành. Nhóm lãnh thổ tổng hợp có lãnh thổ phát triển (gồm 4 tiểu vùng, 3 đô thị và 2 hành lang kinh tế), một số lãnh thổ phát triển ở mức độ hạn chế và lãnh thổ cấm phát triển. Nhóm lãnh thổ theo ngành bao gồm: lãnh thổ công nghiệp (2 cụm và 1 khu công nghiệp), lãnh thổ nông nghiệp (nông hộ, 746 trang trại, 47 hợp tác xã, 01 doanh nghiệp nông nghiệp, nhiều vùng nông nghiệp chuyên canh) và lĩnh vực dịch vụ (có hệ thống chợ, siêu thị, các trung tâm thương mại, điểm, khu du lịch).
