Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) has been widely used and lauded over the last few decades in English language teaching for its dual-focus form of instruction where attention is given to both language and content. Learners therefore are equipped with not only language knowledge, but also knowledge on various subjects such as biology, history, maths, arts, literature, etc., and important soft skills through language supportive methodologies that are incorporated in the lessons. This educational approach is appropriate for students of different ages and levels, from pre-school levels to university students. This study hopes to explore the application of the CLIL approach in the English textbooks for primary-school students in Vietnam. The researcher will then discuss the benefits of using CLIL in English teaching for primary school students, and suggest some ways to exploit specific lessons in the textbooks using the CLIL method.
