Trong những năm gần đây, xếp hạng đại học đã trở thành xu thế, ở một góc độ khác nó đã trở thành một công cụ đảm bảo chất lượng giáo dục đại học. Dù muốn hay không muốn, các trường đại học trên thế giới và Việt Nam vẫn phải tham gia một cách chủ động hay bị động vào việc xếp hạng. Do đó, các cơ sở giáo dục đại học cần chủ động tham gia xếp hạng đại học và biết sử dụng kết quả xếp hạng như một căn cứ khách quan để xác định những chỉ tiêu cải tiến chất lượng, nâng cao thứ hạng thông qua đó khẳng định vị thương hiệu và uy tín. Những hiểu biết về xếp hạng đại học trên thế giới sẽ giúp các trường đại học Việt Nam chủ động tham gia xếp hạng đại học phù hợp với sứ mệnh, mục tiêu và điều kiện của mỗi trường.
