The Covid-19 pandemic has witnessed technology’s sweeping through every facet of life, including the field of education. Higher education in general and English Language Teaching (ELT) in particular are not immune to this trend. On the contrary, it has become a fertile ground for the application of technology, many of which are based on AI technology (artificial intelligence). Although the number of AI research in higher education has been booming in recent years, AI research in ELT is still relatively limited. This article synthesizes and analyzes extant research around the world in the field of AI in ELT as an attempt to delineate a general picture of AI in ELT, hence making recommendations for future research in this field.
