The study aimed to find out the effectiveness of using project-based learning (PBL) on improving students’ speaking skills at Vinh Phuc college by doing action research consisting of 25 second-year preschoolers. The research also looked for students’ perception on applying the method in speaking lessons. The pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaire were delivered to clarify students’ difficulties in speaking English and what aspects affected their speaking competence, and their perception after using the method in their speaking lessons as well. The pre-test and post-test were designed to find out the differences in students’ speaking abilities between before and after the experiment. To have more reliable results, a questionnaire was sent to 15 teachers and lecturers who are teaching English for non-majored English students at Vinh Phuc college and Hanoi pedagogical University No2 to get their valuable experiences and suggestions in dealing with the method in teaching and learning English speaking. The data were recorded and quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed to clarify the aims and objectives. After 11 weeks of learning, the study showed that there was an improvement in students’ speaking skills through the three dimensions including pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar, and interactive communication
thereby the research suggested that PBL should be widely implemented in the classroom.
