Speaking is one of four important skills in learning a foreign language, specifically English. To speak English well, the speaker needs to have knowledge or skills to communicate effectively. Important factors contributing to good speaking include not only vocabulary, grammatical structures or social knowledge, but also confidence when presenting a certain issue. For most Vietnamese students, speaking fluently, clearly and confidently in English is a difficult problem because this language is taught as a foreign language. Students at Bac Lieu University are of no exception, specifically third-year students majoring in English Language. They are always nervous and timid when speaking even though they are encouraged a lot. This psychological factor is a huge barrier to proficient communication. Therefore, in order to effectively teach and learn English speaking, teachers must clearly understand the psychology of students. Through this article, the author points out the limitations in speaking classes, and proposes a few solutions to increase students’ confidence, helping them overcome obstacles when learning speaking skills.
