Narcotic scent traning aids (or pseudoscent, scent simulation, scent surrogate, scent reference) are fabricated mixtures which are comprised of non-narcotic materials but odoriferously identical or have specific scent signatures of a narcotic. Due to prominent advantages in comparison with real narcotics in police canine training, narcotic scent training aids are now more and more widely used in many countries. In present study, a commercially Phencyclidine training aid was collected and analyzed for the purpose of producing a similar product. Phencyclidine was also synthesized in the form of hydrochloride salt. New canines were selected according to regulations and trained using collected sample and our fabricated product, then tested for their ability to detect real Phencyclidine. With high rate of alerts to Phencyclidine sample hiden in different circumstances in field trials, the study showed that the Phencyclidine scent formulation could be used to substitute real Phencyclidine in canine training and helped to overcome current difficulties due to current strict legal framework in supply, usage and management of real narcotics.
