Learning a foreign language is a long-term accumulation process, requiring students to have a certain vocabulary combined with practicing other necessary skills. Vocabulary knowledge is central to communicative competence and has a great influence on second language learners. However, most of students majoring in languages in general and students majoring in Chinese in particular, learning vocabulary faces many difficulties. The most common difficulty for all students, especially first-year students, is the lack of basic vocabulary to be able to learn other skills well. Possessing a abundant vocabulary will greatly assist learners in developing and perfecting other skills more effectively. Through this paper, the author proposes some solutions to improve vocabulary for students majoring in Chinese with the hope of helping students make more progress in learning Chinese.
