Inflammatory bowel disease including Ulcerative colitis and Crohn disease, in Asia have been studied few decades later comparing to the West. The statistics have shown the emergence of this disease in this area. The diagnosis of IBD is based on clinical, radiologic, endoscopic, histopathologic data and the exclusion of other diseases with similar manifestations, especially intestinal tuberculosis and infectious colitis which are still endemic in most of Asian countries. In the management of IBD in Asia, the apply the principles and the goals is the same as in the West: (1) rapid, complete and safe induction of remission, (2) maintenance of remission, (3) minimization of structural damage and (4) diminished cancer risk. Some advance therapies such as Leucocytes apheresis, Biologicals e.g. IFX, Herbal medicine have been tried with encouraging results. With better understanding of the pathogenesis of IBD, with newer modes of managements of and approach to the disease, the outcome of patients with IBD in the Asian-Pacific region will certainly be improved.
