Background: Emergency endoscopic haemostasis is widely used for treating acute esophageal variceal bleeding. The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of emergency endoscopic haemostasis for acute esophageal variceal bleeding. Patients and methods: A retrospective study was performed in 48 patients with acute esophageal variceal bleeding in Hoan My No.l Hospital. Result: Among 48 acute esophageal variceal bleeding patients, 45 patients were ligated with miniloop, 05 patients were injected with histoacryl. Three patients failed control bleeding, one patient died for recurrent bleeding after two week. The time for endoscopy is l.83 + or - 2.3 hour after admission. The rate for control bleeding in first endoscopy is 87.5 percent. Three cases had to do second endoscopy for control bleeding. The total rate for successful control bleeding is 93.7 percent. Transfusion requirements were 3.48 + or - 3.42 units. Hospital stay was 4.05 + or - l.86 days. Conclusion: In most of the acute esophageal variceal bleeding, endoscopist finds location of bleeding and control bleeding in the first endoscopy.
