Astigmatism in children is very common in Vietnam, and it has many compicated features making the correction sometimes difficult. This study aimed at two goals: (1) Describe the clinical characteristics of astigmatism in children
(2) Review the factors related to the results of the correction of astigmatism. Subjects: Children aged from 6 to 15 years seen at the National Eye Hospital from March to August 2011. Results: The rate of astigmatism in both eyes is 92.5 percent. With-the-rule astigmatism is the most common in this study. Simple astigmatism accounts for 14 percent. The rates of horizontal, oblique, and vertical astigmatism are 57 percent, 41.84 percent, and 1.15 percent accordingly. The average amount of astigmatism is 1.74 + or - 1.08 (0.5 D to 6.00 D). Astigmatic amblyopia accounts for 63 percent, of which oblique astigmatism is the highest (72.22 percent). Only 1.4 percent of patients achieve normal vision. Visual improvement is less favorable in oblique, mixed, and high astigmatism.
