Red mud (RM) is the residue of the bauxite treatment for aluminum production. For each part of alumina produced by this process, about one part of red mud is generally discarded as a waste. The effects of chemical treatments on RM were investigated in terms of anti-corrosion and mechanical properties of epoxy/RM composite. RM were modified byN-2-(aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyl trimethoxysilan (AMS). FT-IR spectrum showed the AMS organic compounds associated with SiO2 crystals and minerals in the RM. Carbon steel couponds protected by the three systems: epoxy resin containing red iron oxide, RM neutralized by sea salt and RM/AMS, which were exposed in 3 percent NaCl solution. Impedanceelectrochemical method were performed to characterize the corrosion protection of carbon steel. The results showedthat the epoxy coatings containing RM/AMS had a good protection, compared to the RM system. Mechanical properties as impact and adhesion of the epoxy containing RM/AMS were excellent in comparison with the epoxy containing RM and red iron oxide.
