In history, ladies of the harem of Vietnamese feudal dynasties were not as well-known as the ones of Chinese harem, but there were some talented women in governing the state. Under the Nguyen Dynasty, the hierarchy and routine activities of the concubines were strictly stipulated to avoid the overturn of court affairs by women or the power falling into the hands of relatives on mother's side. Most of the concubines of the Nguyen Emperors came from mandarin families. But no matter who they were, once entering the Forbidden City, they were obliged to accept harsh regulations of Confucianism and struggles, implicit but drastic, between the women of the same fate to gain the emperor's favor. As a result, many of them had to live in solitude and died silently.
