Objective: to assess the knowledge, practice of prevention of hand-foot-mouth disease among women who have children under 5 years of age in Gia Xuyen commune, Gia Loc district, Haiduong province in 2013. Methods: a cross-sectional study using questionnaire was carried out among 404 women who were randomly selected among all women having children under 5 years of age. Results: 70 percent of women having a good knowledge of prevention of hand-food-mouth disease. The percentage of knowing the definition of disease is 75,74 percent
knowing about the symptom (48,8 percent)
route of transmission (13,9 percent)
population at risk of infection (73 percent)
about how to care of infected children (30,7 percent)
how to prevent transmission from infected to non-infected children (41,3 percent). The proportion of women having good practice of prevention of disease was 36.6 percent
of care of infected children (55,7 percent)
of awareness when caring the infected children (30,9 percent)
of preventing transmission (59,4 percent). Conclusion: The knowledge and practice of women with children under 5 years are still limited, communication and education interventions are needed to enhance the knowledge and practice in endemic communes.
