In 2013, there were 41,800 ha of mango area with total volume of 417,268 tones in the Mekong delta. In which Cat Chu mango accounted for 59.1 percent, Hoa Loc mango 23.2 percent and others 17.7 percent. Dong Thap and Tien Giang are the two leading provinces for mango specialized production in the Mekong delta with mango Cat Chu and Hoa Loc varieties. Both Cat Chu and Hoa Loc mangoes have high comparable and competitive advantages in price and quality compared to other mangoes. However, there are many problems regarding awareness of chain actors, linkages of production and distribution as well as the support of local governments at all levels to meet the market needs in terms of quantity and quality. The study applied the value chain approach of Kaplinsky & Morris (2001), the ValueUnks method of GTZ Eschborn (2007), tools for value chain analysis of Vo Thi Thanh Loc and Nguyen Phu Son (2013) and participation of chain actors. The research objectives are (1) analysis of mango market, (2) analysis of mango value chain and (3) suggestion of strategic solutions for upgrading mango value chain that help facilitators at all levels to develop further policies and better measures for increasing added value and sustainable development of mango sector.
