Purpose: Determine the incidence and clinical, morphologic characteristic of Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) of the lower limbs in patients hospitalized with heart failure. Materials and method: Descriptive, cross sectional and prospective study. Since April, 2011 to March, 2013, there were 136 patients treated in Nhan Dan Gia Dinh Hospital, HCMC were diagnosed as chronic heart failure grade III, IV according to New York Heart Association Functional Classification (NYHAFC). Research by using Doppler ultrasound the lower limbs' veins from the ankles to the inguinal folds in both legs. Results: The incidence of DVT of the lower limbs of patients with chronic heart failure grade III, IV by NYHAFC is 42.6 percent (58/136 patients). The average age is 74 (74.1 percent 11.4). Women is 67.2 percent. 5.2 percent patients have swelling in the lower extremities. The incidence of DVT is similar in the right and the left legs (65.5 percent and 67.2 percent, respectively). The incidence of DVT in both 2 legs is 32.8 percent (19/58 patients), in only 1 leg is 67.2 percent (39/58 patients). The most common sites are Popliteal Vein (55.2 percent), Common Femoral Vein (32.8 percent), Superficial Femoral Vein (31 percent), Deep Femoral Vein (19 percent), respectively. Conclusion: Patients with heart failure have higher risks of DVT. However, the clinical symptoms are not easily to be seen as they are easily masked by the symptoms of chronic heart failure.
