Currently, attention is paid to the riparian forests due to their important role in environmental protection and economic social development. Selection of the tree species is an important task that determines the success of riparian protection forest planting. In this study the authors used the following methods: To interview local people
to investigate on 19 typical square plots of 500m2 each in the the nearest natural forest stands for determining forest tree species suitable for riparian protection forest planting in Duong Quang and Van Lang communes, Dong Hy district, Thai Nguyen province. Multi-Criteria Analysis has been conducted for assessing and ranking out tree species qualified for planting riparian protection forests. The initial results allowed to choose 10 tree species most suitable for planting riparian protection forest in Cau river basin including: Ficus lacor, Schima excelsa, Bambusa spinosa, Pterocarya stenoptera, Saraca dives, Melia azedarach, Acacia mangium, Canarium album, Dracontomelum duperreanum, Duabanga sonneratioides.
