The genus Colocasia is important for science and for economic development. In Vietnam, five species are found in wild populations: Colocasia esculenta, C. gigantea, C. lihengeae, and C. menglaensis. C. esculenta is widely planted and cultivated as a source of starchy corms, green leaves, or stolons. It is global crop recognised by the FAO as important for food security. Previous studies on the genus Colocasia in Vietnam have been mainly concerned with taxonomy, species diversity, and methods for the conservation, production and use of cultivated taro. To learn more about the evolutionary history, disttibution, and ecology of genus Colocasia in Northern Vietnam, field surveys have been conducted in Ba Vi National Park (Hanoi), Ba Be National Park (Bac Kan), Hoang Lien Son (Lao Cai), Huu Lien, and Mau Son (Lang Son). Using basic collection data on location and habitat, geographic information systems (GIS), and remote sensing databases, the authors have created predictive distribution maps for four species of Colocasia in Northern Vietnam. The maps incorporate data on 6 environmental conditions in 23 regions, and two possible predictions regarding occurence: present or absent. The maps have been established based using Software Maximum entropy modeling of species geographic distributions version 3.3.3k. Colocasia esculenta was most commonly seen in the field surveys, and has the widest predicted range here, in terms of geography and environment. C. gigantea is predicted in 21 regions (6 environments), C. menglaensis in 3 regions (and 4 environments), and C. lihengeae in 9 areas (3 environments).
