Results of the field survey during two year (2009-2010) of the Quang Ngai Province level research project "Survey and assess present status of the ecological systems, establish scientific bases for the proposal of marine protected area for tourist development at the coastal area of Ly Son district" show that the marine ecological systems of the Ly Son' sea area has been seriously degraded. Within the coral reef, sea weed and sea grass' meadows. the number of marine animals has been greatly reduced. In the Ly Son and nearby marine areas, the survey found that there are 685 species of marine flora and fauna (150 fish species, 94 moluscs species, 15 crustacian species, 36 coral species, 150 seaweed species, 5 sea grass species etc ...), but the number of species with high economic values (such as coral reef fishes) is very small. Some rare species such as lobster, abalone, giant triton, humphead wrasse exist with extremely small number. Especially, seaweed predating animals such as sea urchin, moluscs, fishes are also very rare. Therefore, seaweed overgrowth coral reef, contributing to the degradation of the coral reef The potential for recovery of coral reef are assessed as. average, or at some places, low. The sea grass ecological system is infulenced by sand intake for garlic plantation, eutrophication and wash load from islands by overflow rain water. The potential for recovery of the sea grass ecological system is evaluated as average.
