Mangrove is one of the most productivity ecosystems and valuable in the coastal areas. Population and economic pressure cause considerable degradations of mangrove ecosystem. In the past, in the Dong Rui, Tien Yen district, Quang Ninh province, there were large areas, most abundant species as well as the biggest trees in northern Vietnam. Since 1960s, and especially, after period oj 1990-2008, large areas of mangrove forests were converted into and shrimp pond. Despite of that, Tien Yen Mangroves forest is still considered as precious natural mangrove community in the northern Vietnam. In this report, current status of mangroves ecosystems will be presented as well as issues related to environment, economic development, and challenges to mangrove protection and sustainable uses will be discussed. The restoration of the mangroves would help to improve the living standard of the poor, as well as raising awareness of mangrove's role. However, there are still needed added measure in order to sustainably manage those potential but sensitive mangrove eocsystems.
