Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) has an important role in transcatheter closure of atrial septal defects (ASD). To study the value of TEE in closing ASD, the authors conducted a cross-sectional study on 145 patients with ASD to find a correlation between the results of TEE indication with intervention results in closing ASD. Correlation coefficient r was used to assess the correlations. The value of TEE was assessed through the sensitivity, specificity, overall accuracy and Kappa tests. It showed that the correlation coefficient r was 85.9 percent, the sensitivity, specificity and overall accuracy of TEE were 100 percent , 77.8 percent and 95.9 percent respectively. The Kappa ratio measuring the agreement between TEE indications and outcomes was 0.85. The study concluded that TEE is a very good assessment and is a necessary preparation for transcatheter closure of ASD.
