Cordyceps sinensis has been used for the treatment of many diseases by Chinese traditional medicine for ages. This herb, which has a highly medicinal value, is only found in the high-altitude mountains of the Himalayas. Recent studies have shown that the wild populations of C. sinensis are decreasing due to over-collection. Many attempts have been made to cultivate Cordyceps because of the rarity and high prices of the wild collected variety. During the period 1980-1990s, artificially cultivated Cordyceps products were appeared in main markets as China, the USA, Japan, Korea, etc. Successful cultivation of Cordyceps has shown a significant progress of modern biotechnology, and made the pharmaceuticals more affordable without depending on nature. Currently, there are two major methods of cultivation - in both liquid Imd solid media with the proper control of temperature, humidity, and light. Consequently, the quality of cultured products varies depending on the technology and culture condition used. Cultured products in the right technical standard not only ensure the same compounds and effects as wild Cordyceps but also raise the content of such certain bioactive compounds as cordycepin and adenosine in mycelial, depending on the purpose of manufacturers. In Vietnam, studies on cultured Cordyceps have been initially conducted since 2000, and there were institutions that declared its success in cultivation of Cordyceps. Up to now, there has been a variety of Cordyceps domestically cultured in large scale that meets the huge demand of the pharmaceuticals market in Vienam. The present article provides information on different aspects of artificially cultivated Cordyceps including methods of cultivation, medicinal value and its quality. Further, R&D status of Cordyceps products in Vietnam is also highlighted.
