Objective: To evaluate the results of the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the children with autism. Subject and method: HBOT with 40 courses at the pressures 1.3 atmospheres during 45 minutes was done in 29 children with autism. Result: The average age was 4.96 +/- 2.29 years, and a degree of autism point with average CARS was 41.8 +/- 6.7 points. Boys were more than girls with a ratio of boys/girls of 6.25:1. The results showed the improvement in some functions such as language and reduced hyperactive behaviours
the child slept better after the treatment with p0.05. The total CARS score decreased by 2.6 points after the treatment, ATEC score dropped by 5 points but there was no statistical significance (p0.05). Conclusion: This is a safe therapy with no significant side effect, and the child well tolerated in the early days. Further studies would be wise to use standardized behavioral measurement tools and physiological biomarkers in a controlled study design.
