While children receive one or more given names by adults in the family, children can give themselves a courtesy name which is based on his given name. Vietnamese men of letters in ancient times had high 'ego' consciousness as can be seen by their self-given courtesy names. While this ego is a self-assertion, it represents dignity and carries responsibility.
