Objective: To describe dietary characteristics of obese children, who came to Hochiminh city Nutrition Center for treatment. Methods: Measure height and weight, interview 24h-recall dietary intake of 331 obese children from 6-18 years old, who came to HCMC Nutrition Center for treatment. Average energy and nutrient intake of the children were compared to RDA for Vietnamese people. Results: Average energy intake of children in the group 6-9 years old were higher than RDA, 154.9 percent and 113.3 percent, respectively. The average protein intake of obese children in all age groups were very high (more than 150 percent) compared to RDA. Only the 6 years old group achieved RDA in calcium intake, other groups consumed calcium in very low level compared to RDA. The average sodium in the diet of obese children was very high, 2 to 2.5 folds compared to RDA. The average fiber intake was very low (10g/day). Conclusions: Dietary of obese children was unbalanced, especially they ate much more protein, less calcium, more salt, and less fiber. The combination of low calcium intake and high sodium intake should be concerned.
