The goal of this study is to determine the relationship between the LBT and the American Rheumatism Association Criteria 1997 (ARA). This cross-sectional descriptive survey assessed LBT of lesional skin and normal skin in 34 SLE patients examined in the National Hospital of Dermatology and Venereology from September 2009 to September 2010. The relationship between LBT findings and ARA 1997 for SLE was analysed. In SLE, the odds ratio between IgG deposits on lesional skin and the severity of renal disease was increased 8 folds with an approximate 95 percent confidence interval [1.1 - 58.1], P = 0.01. The odds ratio between IgM deposits on lesional skin and the positive anti-ds DNA was increased by 9.2 with an approximate 95 percent confidence interval [1.2 - 69.9], P = 0.009. In conclusion, LBT is an SLE diagnostic test not related to SLE diagnostic criteria. It works to support the diagnostic criteria for SLE by ARA. LBT should be done for SLE patients who have early skin lesions, especially when there was insufficient 4/11 ARA to support the definitive diagnosis.
