The research on Alcidodes frenatus Feisthamel (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) was conducted from June 2008 to April 2009 through field surveys and insect rearing on potted young mango plants in the .net house of the Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture and Applied Biology, Can Tho University. The field survey on mango orchards in 9 provinces of the Mekong Delta (Long An, Tien Giang, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Ben Tre, Can Tho, Hau Giang and Soc Trang) recorded the presence of A. frenatus in most of the surveyed provinces (the percentage of infested orchards was: 99.38 percent), and the percentage of infested plants/surveyed orchard in several orchards was up to 81-100 percent (17.57 percent of the surveyed orchards). Under the net house conditions t°C: 30.67 (27 - 36) and H percent: 82.33 (61 - 93) and being reared on Cat Hoa Loc variety, the life cycle of A. frenatus is approximately 63 - 73 days, with egg, larval and pupal stages lasted 5.4 +/- 0.51
27.6 +/- 1.83 and 11.6 +/- 0.51 days, respectively. The longevity of the adults is 161.5 +/- 31.97 days. A. frenatus is able to lay eggs up to 100 - 200 eggs with the hatching rate of about 99 percent. This weevil only attacks and lays eggs on young mango shoots. Under field conditions, the natural mortality of A. frenatus can reach 28.73 percent, of which 17.42 percent is caused by hymenopteran parasitoids.
