 The butterfly community of Pu Long Nature Reserve can be characterized as mixed lowland with a number of elements typical of the montane fauna. This feature can be found also in some other limestone areas of northern Vietnam. It has a rather low diversity
  158 butterfly species were collected during two weeks. Biogeographically, the structure of the local fauna is quite typical for the limestone areas of northern Vietnam. The majority of species (60 percent) belongs to the Oriental fauna mainland up to the Sunda Islands). At the same time more than 5 percent of the species present at high elevations belong to Sino - Himalayan fauna. In conclusion, the butterfly community of pu Long Nature Reserve is important and valuable from a scientific viewpoint. The area is poorly studied and potentially it may be contained some unknown taxa. During last few years more than fifteen new butterfly species and subspecies have been discovered from other limestone areas in northern and central Vietnam.
