BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most frequently diagnosed malignancy worldwide. Currently, irinotecan (CPT-11) is used alone or in combination with other drugs to treat patients with advanced CRC. However, the 5-year survival rate for metastatic CRC remains below 10 %, largely due to chemotherapy resistance.
