Khái niệm cực trị tốc độ gió ở đây được hiểu theo nghĩa là giá trị lớn nhất trong một khoảng thời gian quan trắc và phương pháp phân tích cực trị, được áp dụng để xác định các trị số tốc độ gió theo hướng thịnh hành ứng với chu kỳ lặp lại nào đó. Trong thực tiễn kỹ thuật biển, các chu kỳ lặp được sử dụng nhiều nhất nằm trong khoảng từ 50 năm đến 200 năm, tuy nhiên đi với các công trình có ý nghĩa kinh tế, xã hội và lịch sử cao, người ta thường sử dụng chu kỳ lặp 500 năm, 1000 năm, thậm chí 10000 năm. Các trị số đặc trưng mang tính chất quy luật theo mùa cũng như các giá trị cực trị tần suất hiếm, những thông tin này rất quan trọng đối với công tác thiết kế công trình ven bờ biển, sẽ giúp ích nhiều cho định hướng phát triển kinh tế của huyện đảo, quy hoạch khu neo đậu tầu thuyền tránh trú bão, phát triển điện gió ...bài báo này trình bày kết quả tính toán giá trị cực trị và tính biến động của yếu tố gió trên đảo Lý Sơn của đề tài KC09.11/11-15.The concept of extreme wind velocity here is understood to mean that the maximum value for a period of observation and the analytical method, it is used to determine wind speed values in the direction of any return period.
